WHAT IF A BLACK GIRL KNEW!

Hey,so I just thought to document this here, It is an old poem I wrote, the inspiration came from basically watching the sterotypes black girls have to go through and how we are constantly seeking validation for our beauty, then I listened to Dylema's poem "what if a black girl knew "....I just thought to remind all black girls that they are just perfect.

Black girl

WHAT IF A BLACK GIRL KNEW

 #1

What if a black girl knew
She could embrace herself
That she could come to terms with her form
That her body must not conform to the norm
That it is an embodiment of fulfilment in itself

What if a black girl knew
That the folds on her belly is not a clarion call
Not a cue to seal up her confidence
That the rolls of lush flesh on her back is not a reason to relapse
That her loose skin is not a reason for her to lose herself
and be uptight
What if she knew that the blemishes on her face
Is evidence that she is human and not a reason
to forget all her wishes
That the bags beneath her eyes are not empty, that they
Carry clear vision and sight for passion
That her little, hollow or bulgy eyes will lead her to light

What if she knew
that the hair sprouting from the pores of her skin is uniqueness that will help her wax strong
That her big lips are succulent
That even her thick thighs can climb the ladder of success
That her body is magic

What if she knew
that even without the visibility of her collar bones
She is still a valid bone structure
That her stance can still make dry bones rise again
What if a black girl knew
That her beauty does not need validation
What if she knew that her knuckles can still chop knuckle(lol I ran out of lines here)....

Black girl

#2

*What if a black girl knew
That she is culture
That the flicker in her eyes can ignite a dream
That the wonder lingering in her soul
can become a wonder
That the pout on her lips can turn to a story
What if a black girl knew
That her skin is heritage
That it's colour does not need more colour
That it is bright enough
*What If she knew
That she could tie the world beneath her turban
And own it
That her hands are equipped for moulding
Life's and shaping destinies
*What if she knew
That she could dream and wake up to it in reality
That her history is not misery
That her roots should never be uprooted
That though she is in boots, a strapless dress,
Fine silk or ankara
She is a representation of that place
That place were her true soul lives in freedom.

Black girl

#3

What if a black girl knew
That she is  blessing to the earth
Divine dust breathing life
With Equipped bodies grounded in
The art of holding life in her belly

What if a black girl knew
That her skin is the colour of gold dust
Glistening above bones that form
the frame work of her body
A body that curves in diverse shapes and sizes
or make a straight line
What if she knew
That this body is actually her own
An ownership she might
merge into a partnership
not dominace or choose to keep for herself
What if she knew
That the flesh that part her lips to showcase her fine teeth
Can close and open at will
That her quick gesture or smile is not consent
That an invitation to her home is not an invitation to treat her body like a treat
That the pressing of her palm against fingers
Is not a contract to make unsolicited  contact with her body

What if she knew
That it's okay for her hair to be nappy
That her braids are to adorn her head
And not a means to drag her by even when she pleads bye
That her make up is good but it is not all she is made off
That deep down she is more than a pretty face

That her silence should have a voice
That her eyes should only water with reasonable reason

What if she knew that stereotypes do not fit her type
That maybe her body is main, it is not a prototype
That she can give room for growth and newness
What if she knew that it's not her fault.

Word of advice for people aspiring to write,  your first draft is not meant to be perfect when I wrote this poem I thought it was the next best thing after maya angelou's Phenomenal woman but looking at it now I can see the flaws , better ways I should have put tenses etc.,I am working on a poem with this same theme and I am encouraged by my growth. So never discard your first draft use it as a reference point and don't beat yourself up, it does not have to be perfect - Roseline Mgbodichinma

Check out @Dylema_ page she is amazing!

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE + A CHICKEN PARODY

Storytime

It was my darling's birthday( the fair one on black ) and I missed it because I traveled.  I got back and I thought let's go out and hang. let's just chill.

After many hours of indecisiveness, we carried ourselves to this eatery. Now, this was not our first time there. I have never been impressed by that place but this time it was worse! The customer service was zero.

Poor customer service

In this eatery, there is this chicken package that comes with two plates of rice, a bucket chicken, chips or Moi Moi then a large bottle of any soft drink. We wanted to order that but I rose my big hand and said no. I want us to get a cheaper package, in this economy you want us to spend #5400 on rice and coke, who does that.

There was another package that went for #1300, mind you all these things were on display so we could see the food and the prices slated on them, brethren one dark clueless boy came to attend to us. He told us the #1300 package came with chips, rice, and chicken, then a drink. We asked up to four times to be sure because the menu on display was a bit misleading. He confirmed and sharp girls like us ordered 3 plates. So #3900 as opposed to #5400.

Uncle started serving it after like 20 minutes of wasting our time. We were tired of standing at the counter at this point. We were famished and ready to eat, next thing he removed the chips from the plate and said that the Menu was changed and it was just rice and 4 crumbs of chicken that went for #1300.

One of the waitresses saw us complaining so she asked who was serving us and he said to me!  me! As per I got this, serving is my calling, I have masters in food menu cramming and arrangement. He didn't want her interfering. so she left him to it. I insisted I wasn't going to pay for nonsense. I can't order one thing and you give me another thing and expect me to pay, but as a child of God patience is key so I was acting cool about it.

My level headed friend said we should manage the food, after all, it's still rice and chicken, the guy was already sweating because he said they had recorded the order and we had to pay or else he would bear the cost. I asked if we could substitute the rice for 700 Naira Ice cream and 350 Naira meat Pie and he refused, said that it was against their policy.

I was there thinking to myself, so being a confused waiter is part of your policy?
Customer service in some restaurants are just poor, how will the waiter be unfamiliar with the menu? So I can't change my order? How is your incapability my concern?

Chicken

We hoped that considering the size of the food, it would at least be delicious ha! We thought wrong. I wanted to go and leave him there to face the wrath. But again, my friend said let's manage. We had not  tasted anything yet. What's the worst that can happen.

He served us the rice, people of God when he put it. I was looking for the dog they were serving because it cannot be me they just gave one spoon of jollof rice for #1300.

I was at 100 degrees boiling point but I was calm, time to put chicken and he put 4 pieces of one thing that looked like dried cashew nuts, at this point you would think we walked out ...if I hear!

Let me give you a clear picture

Rice: Almost tasteless but I thought, hey it's Jollof and we can manage and chew chaff, there is chicken inside too, so what's the worst that can happen.

Chicken: Oh lord!!!!! These people roasted leftover chicken and decorated it with salt, no you don't understand, the amount of salt in that thing will peel your tongue, there was no flesh. We basically paid for bone and salt. Did I tell them I was lacking Iodine and calcium?

Suffice all to say, It was the most distasteful eatery experience of my life.

Imagine preparing to take your friend out and this happens to you, on someone's birthday bikonu! I expected better value for my money, the only thing that made sense was Fanta because they didn't produce it. If not, I am pretty sure the Fanta would have been salty too.

There was no toothpick or floss provided, the tray was broken, the waiter was sweating under the air-conditioner, how irritating!

Friends
L-Eunice M-Olivia R- Me

Someone said I should give them the benefit of doubt, that maybe something went wrong on that day. so I will not call them out. And I still go there occasionally to get other things e.g bread. I won't be risking any other thing, till I am convinced there is a change.

Salty chicken

I  wrapped the so-called chicken in my bag, I plan to add it to the Egusi soup I am cooking because I can't just leave my money there and of course we would not put salt in the soup because the one they used in frying or baking the bone they served us will be enough for two soups.

Anyway, lesson learned.

Balancing is different from multitasking + why do you want to hurry up and matter ?

Balancing

It is the end of march already somebody tell 2019 to slow down nobody is chasing it, or is it just me? Do you ever feel like Time is running out like there are things you need to achieve at a certain, age, time or period? Is balancing hard for you?
It is not a rhetorical question don’t worry the answer is yes!
Everybody wants to blow and it is totally fine, but I will ask you in Salem king's voice why do you want to hurry up and matter?

Nobody wants to sit down on the bench again and take the pain of the process. I genuinely like the hustling spirit, I want all my guys to be ballers. But what can we really do to achieve this? I don't have all the answers But I can tell you for free balancing is key. It is really early as I type this post, I just woke up wondering about a lot of things.

I have this blog that I want to be serious about. I have my Instagram Page that I sincerely want to build into a community.
I strongly recommend you read purpose-driven life by Rick warren. Here is a link to the audio version of purpose-driven life it will really help to set your mind straight.

Balance is the even distribution of weight, balance is stability. Balancing is a lifestyle, a conscious effort that has grown into commitment. E.g when you play away the semester and you have few days to exams so you read the courses simultaneously while cooking, washing, doing assignments, etc, in this case, did you multitask? Yes, do you live a balanced life? No!
Did I just make sense?

Sonia on the left, Pamela on the right.

Balancing

In case I haven’t said it here.
I am a law student(give me a chilled glass of anything cold pls) I always knew I was going to do this but nothing prepared me for the stress and brain drain. I thought it was simply an extension of my secondary school government classes. Oh ! I should have done some other course...lol Now I am not saying other courses are easy but you know when you are in a stressful situation, It is normal to think the grass is greener on the other side, till you go there and see reality.
I am sure you have asked yourself questions about your current level in life and its okay. For me, I just keep wondering like Law is not beans. I have to go to my classes because this degree will not get itself. I have writing contests to enter, novels to read, And most of all I have God.

Till today I am still lost on how I am supposed to juxtapose all these things.  I follow The amazing Nigerian actress Jemima Osunde and I am sincerely wondering how someone can be great and consistent with a successful acting career and still scale through medical school in rainbow colours, It is a wow!
Live a life that is well balanced; don't do things in excess - Daniel
One day I got back from school and I asked myself what on earth am/I here for. Like God are you sure music is not my calling (but after I soloed amazing by Nathaniel Bassey in secondary school  I perished that idea) can one good samaritan just credit my account with millions? So I'd just stop going to school and start balling lol.

Balancing is not multitasking, It is very similar but in some ways different.

Balancing

Balance is a feeling derived from being whole and complete; it's a sense of harmony. It is essential to maintaining quality in life and work. Joshua Osenga, 12 years a Cubicle Slave

I don’t know what the primary purpose of this post is, but I know someone needs to hear It. One essential thing I know I lack is Balance, yes I will be truthful, getting everything done at the set time is too good to be true for me.

The more often you decline invitations to spend time with friends or family because you are too busy with either work or other activities, the more you should realize that your life is not in balance." Byron Pulsifer, Balanced Life
It is putting something In a steady position so It does not fall, multitasking is simply doing more than one task at a time, see you can multitask and still have Unbalanced areas of your life, but balance keeps you on track. It keeps you in control and at the helm of affairs, with it comes multitasking.
Multitasking can happen anytime. you don't really need to be disciplined or anything.

Balancing

Before you have the panic and self-doubt attack I had this morning ask yourself this

  • why am I here?
  • why am I studying this?
  • why am I eating this?
  • why did I start this?
  • why am I writing this?
  • Why am I still reading this blog post?

I am not going all motivational speakerish on you. I just wish you would genuinely ask yourself these questions, think long and hard it will help your life.
For instance, when I see Ice cream, bread or Juice before I eat It, I ask myself why am I eating this, am I hungry? didn’t I just eat? shebi Man does not leave by bread alone. Why? Because I have a weight loss goal. More than half of the time I eat It anyway, but baby steps we are getting there. I want a consistent healthy eating lifestyle, something I can work with, a pattern. That's what balance is all about.

What the heck is your why, when you know your why, it will drive you. Learn to do things before it is due, sometimes this "as and when due" can get you choked up on stuff.

Waist trainers

All the fine pictures you see Pamela took them for me with Sonia’s iPhone 6s, that's what I call teamwork and support or is it just love.

Pamela is a sweet girl and she has a passion for photography, I love how she researches and Is willing to learn new things plus she is tongue lashing and holy ghost filled. It is not because she is my friend I am just naturally attracted to women with vision.
I didn’t allow her to edit the pictures because I wanted it as it was taken, but if she did it would have been top-notch Pah_mcy is her Instagram handle. Say hi tell her you are from the blog.

Sonia, she wanted to be an astronaut, a doctor( because she is good with blood ) a musician, then study international relations and diplomacy because you know this country is beginning to piss everybody off.

But you know the lord took her to the law department because his ways are not our ways.
Sonia is a writer, a sweet girl, a sensible slay queen and a child of God with the kind of smile I am in love with. She is the owner of the iPhone, she just had to leave the android department.  Itsoni_ee is her Instagram handle, go and say hi, tell her you are from the blog.

Balancing

This post was all over the place but I hope you learn a thing or two? We are all trying to figure things out, share your findings with me.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT READ +READING HABITS AND MEDIUMS

Reading habits

Hey there my love, I am here to tell you why you should not be reading and also help you improve your reading habits so you can find your reading forte.

Reading habits

You know reading can be a good thing.
I mean it is a good thing because it expands your horizon. It equips you with knowledge and all of that good stuff but It can be toxic If you’re doing it for the wrong reasons , you’re probably waiting for me to hit the hammer on the nail , I will hit It, just keep reading.

I have passion for teaching KIds to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful;and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage- Roald Dahl

Reading habits

I get a lot of questions from people about my reading habits aka why I love books and how I read books.

This time, It is not about Academics or school work because to be honest sometimes most Nigerian students including me only read to pass exams maybe because the educational system and process is boring and stressful. If you are in the abroad is it better there? Tell me, that is an issue for another day.

Reading is the discount ticket to everywhere - Mary schmich

Reading habits

We will be discussing other books, not school books, so don’t run away grab a glass of anything that you can gulp down your throat  without causing trouble for your stomach and let’s engage ok.

DISCLAIMER: I don’t read as much as people think I do, a lot of my people will disagree but it is the plain truth. I just try my best.

Now, I don’t know if it’s just me but I face a lot of pressure when it comes to reading books, like when I look around  and I see people who  can read for Africa.

I just find myself wishing I could read more. You probably have that one friend that reads a lot and you wonder how he/ she does it? Like how and why does he/she enjoy reading?

Reading habits

I don’t have all the answers but I know people read for different reasons. I also know everybody can read books, anybody can become a bookworm, you just need to find the right book and the right medium to read the book.

HERE ARE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BE READING

1.  JUST BECAUSE OTHERS ARE READING: listen, you can be motivated by the reading ability of others but when you start seeing it as a competition ‘’as per I read pass you’’ It only means you have lost your essence and sense of direction, don’t resent yourself if you’ve done this, it is totally okay just snap out of it, I have been there, I have done that.

See eh that Ada read 50 books in three weeks is not a reason you should read or buy 100 books to read, you will end up missing all your schedules and appointments and you will not enjoy it.
I was the chairman on that table till I nearly failed one of my courses trying to finish ‘’THERE WAS A COUNTRY ‘’ by Chinua Achebe simply because someone on Instagram bragged about reading it, I wanted to prove myself, to show them that I can read big books too , I have still not finished it and it is not about to be finished anytime soon.

There was a country
One day I will take a cozy vacation and read this book well until then, borrow pose!

My Point is, everybody has the unique ability to plan and execute differently so don’t go out of your way because someone is going their way. Amen!

I can't imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once- C.s Lewis

BECAUSE OF THE BOOK REVIEW:

Remember the review of a book is very subjective to the reader whether good or bad. It is what the reader thinks and interprets from the book, there are diverse perspectives and personalities in this world o. If I hate a book you might be love struck by it. So read a book because you are Interested in the genre or even because you love the cover lol anything. Just do it for yourself.

Reviews can help you want a book ,for instance I have heard only good things about Trevor Noah’s  ‘’Born a crime’’ and I can’t wait to read it.
I might read it and not like it (doubt that),let's  say I do a bad review about it and because of my review you decide not to  buy the book again. Does that make sense to you? I hope not.

Reading habits

If you don't like to read, you haven't foud the right book- J.k Rowling
It is not that you naturally hate reading books; you just have not found the right book yet. I employ you to understand your interests and go for it. What excites you? Ask yourself is it romance, memoirs, nonfiction, paranormal,
fashion, etc what are you into? sit down and revaluate. what style of writing can you connect with.

PS: to find out all these things I am telling you you have to read.

let me give you a tip, when you buy a book read the first chapter and/ or the last , then go somewhere in the middle, then admire the cover, breathe.

If you've done all these things and you still don't like the book feel free to drop it, try another one and if you have done all and no book interests you, come and see my therapist or book a book consultation with me  oshee did you feel my rhyme scheme . I may or may not be joking.

you know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend-Paul Sweeney

Realize that it is not about the author, you can dislike a book from your favourite author and you can totally love a book by your worst author. Am I flowing?

For the longest time, I was told and I believed Wole Soyinka’s books were incomprehensible, I didn’t bother reading his works till I came across ‘’Telephone conversation’’ and I loved it.

My friend did not like Chinua Achebe’s books so I assumed I won’t like it too, but look at me now, I have read Things fall apart thrice and I will still read It again because it holds so much cultural power.

There was a country

I am not a fan of science fiction and that is Nnedi Okorafor’s specialty.
I liked her as person not as an author till
A friend made me read ‘’Who fears death’’ not done yet but It I like It midway plus I read her short story ‘The palm wine bandit’ It is a very liberating piece.

All I am Saying  is find what you love and connect with it , you will be a book beast in no time okay and it doesn’t matter if you are a slow or fast reader, Just read at your pace, even If it takes you two days to read one chapter relax we die here , nobody is chasing you.

If you don't like someones story, write your own- Chinua Achebe

Choose a reading medium or pattern suitable for you
If it’s paper back ngwanu! , If it’s E-book swipe away, if its audio book listen till your ear drums beg for emancipation, don’t go and be deaf o and say I sent you.

ISSUES WITH BODY IMAGE AND THE MEDIA

Body image

Today I want to talk about body image and why you should be confident and embrace your body.

It’s easier said than done especially in this insane media world with diverse people who define beauty by their own standards. It can be very self-conflicting to see people around you or on the internet with banging bodies that you don't have.

I believe it happens to the best of us and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. However, it is something that has to be stopped or at least reduced to the barest minimum.

We are all created differently and It’s for good reason, if everybody had a figure 8, the world would be such a boring place trust me. So just understand your body and go with exactly what works for you. It can be a good thing to dress solely according to your body shape but it can be limiting as well, I’d say wear what makes you comfortable las las everybody will be alright.

ISSUES WITH BODY IMAGE AND THE MEDIA

I have heard people say short girls should not wear long or midi skirts, that plus-sized girls should not wear floral, prints or turtle neck. Some say tall girls should not wear heels. Lol, what other silly punch lines have you heard?.

Note that this is not me telling you to look dishevelled or unstylish. This is me saying be free and comfortable, enjoy whatever you like regardless of your body shape. I love  Chanel ambrose I have learned a lot about body confidence from her.

Do not let social media intimidate you, heck! most people only put up their best part or the best angle and that's fine. Don't throw a pity party for yourself over someone's portfolio. Don’t dim yourself over someone else's highlight reel. It’s okay to make an effort to slay. I edit the hell out of pictures sometimes, so just relax you are fine!

I recently watched a video about young girls talking about body Image Click here to watch, maybe it will encourage you to know that you are not alone and most people especially women go through self-esteem issues at different points in their lives. The struggle is real.

See digital tummy tuck, I couldn't breathe lol, I love it too..it's never that deep.

Also, there are lots of people who want to change certain things about their bodies and that’s okay. If you can’t come to terms with the body you have, then try to do something about it. It's up to you. Do not keep looking and hating yourself, hit the gym, go on a clean diet or invest in your skincare routine, get down to work and rebuild your body into that awesome masterpiece. If it’s plastic surgery you want to do, by all means, carry on but please do it well please I beg you, please.

I once saw a lady with a hexagonal bum, like her behind, was almost square. People of God save up and do it properly. There is a thin line between increasing the size of your bum and looking like a kangaroo. Your nose must not be as sharp as a double-edged sword before you have peace, the nose is for breathing and if you can breathe then your nose is perfect.

I have watched some mind-blowing plastic surgery documentaries and videos, Watch It's crazy.  Just to add stretch marks are like tiger stripes and I find it beautiful and honourable. If you have them like me don’t try to cover it or be ashamed. It is totally normal.

Love yourself because if you don’t, you’d be too miserable and thus not disciplined enough to make the changes you desire. You can read this article it will encourage you to be more confident in thyself.

Body image and the media
Say nice things to yourself as for I look like a trillion box of vanilla gold..lol

AFFIRMATIONS

Listen to me!

Your small boobs are cute, your big boobs are great. Your big belly is fun, your flabby arms will lead you to good places and hold lovely memories. Those tiny legs are sexy!

Whether you are big, small, tall, slim, medium or anything just know that you are enough and at the end of the day it’s not what size you wear but how you wear your size.

Give up on your insecurities and go look long and hard in the mirror until you start to see and feel good about your self or perhaps take a selfie-and declare to yourself. ‘’I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I am enough and I matter.’’

I love you and I hope you learned a thing or two or three or more about body confidence,  body image, and the media. Till next time I wish you peace, don't forget to stare long and hard in the mirror it's been proven to help you embrace your body.

My LIT 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY + THE PANIC OF GROWING OLDER

Finally I am 18! You guys I am so ecstatic, you have no idea how long I have waited for this age.
I thank God for keeping me.  I couldn’t wait to turn 18 but look at me now feeling so old.
A part of me wishes I was turning 16 again and the other part is so pumped that I am 18. I got a lot of messages, calls etc. Like my friends are the sweetest, they were actually counting down to 12am to call me and guess what I only took one call at that time because your girl slept off  praying.

I can’t remember what I even prayed for but I know I have been thinking and revaluating, I have asked myself some hard questions like what is my purpose , what defines me , what drives me ,who are my friends , how is my love life.

I am talking about Agape love; my approach and response towards people How do I respond to people?  who do people say that I am( see me sounding like Master Jesus).
The phase of adulthood just began for me and I just realized that I am getting closer to being responsible for myself. People of God I can actually go to kirikiri (jail) now  so no messing up lol.

My Phone decided to start acting up and I missed a lot of calls and messages, It pained my entire being eh, I hope everybody understands while I await my Iphone x  yunno!
I recieved gifts,Hugs and lots of kisses
I honestly feel some type of way ever since my birthday party on the (25th January).

I think it is the panic of growing older; I literally got a pen and paper to plan my life. Epic! Am I over thinking things? Tell me how you felt when you turned eighteen or grew older.

This panic didn’t start now because my favourite poem in secondary school was ‘’THE PANIC OF GROWING OLDER’’click here to read the poem,It is so beautiful, relatetable and so  freaking accurate, it's by Lenrie peters and I memorised it word for word  now, It is all up in my feelings. Oh well! My year just started and I am going to utilise it. From today I will be more intentional, consistent and happy A.K.A living my best life.

My  Eighteenth birthday was lit by the way, I had people I love come together and we had mad fun. I felt loved like everything was about me. You know I really wish to have a million followers someday with a lot of engagement on my Instagram page and blog but I realized I wasn’t ready at all.

I had roughly 200 messages on my birthday and I couldn’t reply everybody guys It’s a lot of work. I was utterly confused so on this note I forgive the love of my life Abimbola Craig for not replying any of my Dm’s. I understand now GOODNESS!!!  And I hope you learn too

Anyway, my birthday was basically a hang out situation, we played, we got to talk about Adulting , sex, rape, dressing etc. and it was on that day I realised I  never watched high school musical(don’t ask me what I did with my childhood) or Game of thrones (don’t bite me I will watch for watching sake  hopefully sometime this year)
am I the only one who has not watched it? Because everyone seems to think I am an alien for not watching it, Safe to say my birthday was both educating and entertaining.

I will be sharing all we talked about in subsequent posts guys I learnt a lot from different perspectives. Ok this is long enough let me show you  the visuals
